Candelas, the magic night in Almendralejo
February the 1st night the city of Almendralejo let itself to be conquered by the fire which takes away bad spirits and ghosts. It is noteworthy to see how the city burns. Lots of people travel to Almendralejo to enjoy this celebration.

The candelas (bonfires) have been held since 17th Century, however it is believed that this ritual was born long time ago.
In order to prepare the celebration, the people of Almendralejo, main city in the Tierra de Barros zone, accumulate wood and old furniture, as well as all the objects they want to come away.
These things are piled up on the streets and squares making artistic bonfires addorned with Pantarujas, puppets, which embodies bad spirits.
At 8 'clock in the evening, when the bells peal announcing the begining of the burning, the people gather around the bonfires to look at the fire that will last all night long.
Around the bonfire children play while adults taste good wines and the products made in the typical slaughters, as well as roasted sardines and spanish omelettes.
It is a custom to stroll through the city to know the bonfires in the neighbourhoods; as well as to meet with all the people that comes out to have a good time all night long.
This magical night, the city 'burns' and purifies itself.
