Carnival in Navalmoral
Navalmoral de la Mata conmemorates its main feast. The city is embellished
and joyful to welcome its own inhabitants and visitors to live this cheerful
feast.

This celebratiion was born three centuries ago. For some time
it was called Fiestas de Invierno (winter
festival), while carnival was forbidden under political issues in Spain, the
people of Navalmoral de la Mata made their feast survive. This tradition has
been adapted to present times, and it is noteworthy to watch the Group
Parade.
The chupinazo (fierce shot)
on the main square, is the starting point and where people and musical groups
meet.
During the whole weekend people go to this city to participate
in this joyful party.
On Sunday (called 'domingo gordo') the group parade takes place:
thousands of participants and visitors are involved in this magnificent event.
Moreover, on Tuesday there is another group parade. The Ash
Wednesday is the last day of this feast. That day a puppet representing
a big sardine covers the streets of the city, behind this figure the people
dressed in black simulates cryings and sobs. When the procession reaches the
main square the sardine is burn.
Thus, the inhabitants of Navalmoral say goodbye to their carnival
up to next year. Until that date they will be dreaming on this feast full of
colours and joy.
