FIO - Extremadura Birdwatching Fair. Monfrague
FIO, the International Ornithological Tourism Fair or commonly knows as Extremadura Birdwatching Fair is on the last weekend of February, into the Monfrague National Park, one of the most important ornithological reserves in the world.

The main activities of FIO take place in the small village of Villarreal de San Carlos.
Villarreal de San Carlos is located in the hearth of the Monfrague National Park, declared Biosphere reserve by UNESCO, as a representative environment of forest and Mediterranean bush.
The Extremadura Birdwatching Fair is a meeting point for professionals in the tourism sector, manufacturers and suppliers of optical devices and other equipment and accessories, mainly related with birdwatching but also with other outdoor activities. Professionals and amateurs interested in ornithology and birdwatching. And, of course, for all visitors that goes to Villareal de San Carlos that weekend.
Monfrague National Park has the biggest breeding colony of Monk Vulture or Eurasian Black Vulture (Aegypius monachus), the worldwide biggest concentration of Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti) and one of the biggest colonies of Black Storks (Ciconia nigra). It is considered as the main refuge of the European Mediterranean fauna.
During the fair there are many activities: walking to birdwatching with expert guides, tests of the most advanced monitoring and optical equipment, starting lessons by professionals, workshops, fam trips, photo contests..
Extremadura Birdwatching Fair has become one of the most importants European events in the sector. The fair has the main objective of increasing the value of a more friendly environment and sustainable tourism.
