Orellana's dam and Sierra de Pela
The special conservation area Orellana reservoir belongs
to the international wetlands. The mountain range of Pela, the wetlands, fertile
plains and plains compose one of the biodiversity landscapes of great importance
in Extremadura.

This is the only wetland of Extremadura that belongs
to the Wetlands of International Importance declared by the Ramsar Convention.
The reservoir of Orellana is one of the
greatest dams in Guadiana River, close to Garcia-Sola and Cíjara dam.

The Mountain range of Pela (Sierra
de Pela) is a large mountain range that stand out around fertile plains and
plains where irrigation crops, cereal cultivations, pastures, and thickets compose
the largest biodiversity area in Extremadura.
Vegetable life is emphasized by holm
oaks in pastures, but also these trees are on shady sides and unapproachable
places on the mountains.
Strawberry trees and bushes fill
the empty spaces in hill sides south-facing slopes
In the riverbanks and dam shores thickets, oleanders, securinega,
black poplar, or tamarisks sprout.
Birds are the most outstanding species in the wetland and the
mountain range. Here golden eagle, bonelli's eagle, osprey, tawny vulture, egyptian
vulture, crag martin, blue rock thrush, lesser kestrel, ... are some of the
species that inhabit around the reservoir.
From hillsides to the borders of the dam pastures stretch out
and in that zone great spotted cuckoo, magpie,
turtledove, or little storks fly over the dam.

Orellana reservoir belongs to the dams
and reservoirs network at the East of Extremadura; and it is composed
of La Serena reservoir, Zújar dam, García-Sola reservoir, and
the Natural Reserve of Cíjara. This network is placed in the regions
of La Serena and La Siberia, both areas are interesting places to know, enjoy
their gastronomy and meet their people.
