San Pedro Mountain Range
In the western zone of Cáceres province is located the mountain range
of San Pedro, this area has been declared Special Conservation Area (ZEC) and
Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) where Mediterranean forest and thickets
are home for a wide variety of species.

The territory the mountain range occupies is
a natural paradise where forests, pastures and thickets intermingle. Lakes,
streams and Peña del Águila dam
join to the vegetable life and the wide variety of birds, vertabrates and amphibians.
This natural space is perfect to enjoy nature by means of fishing, hunting or
going for a hikking path.
Holm oaks and cork oak forests come together
with broom and heather. The pastures, rockroses and asphodelus make up dry land
landscapes.
Oaks, alders, willows
and ashes together with rivers and streams drop the high temperatures
and provide humidity and increase weather conditions of the mountain range and
the region. This is the perfect ecosystem for Iberian
lynx and wolf to live.
The mountain range of San Pedro is home for species
in danger of extinction such as Iberian imperial eagle.
This is one of the most outstanding birds in San Pedro, a place where this bird
of prey fly over. It is important to know basic information about how birds
live, and some warnigs we should take into account before watching the birds,
for that reason groups and associations such as the ornithological
group of Cáceres (GOCE) provides information and brochures about
the birds.
Sierra de San Pedro is a perfect zone for birdwatching.
As the seasons go by the
landscape of San Pedro changes providing a beautiful colorful sight.
When Autumm and first rains come deers bellow to attrack their couples and mushrooms
grow up. The zone is a mushroom paradise and there is a wide range of varieties
, however, we must be careful with them. When the temperatures decrease wood
pigeons fly over the wintry landscape and the sky becomes an excellent scene
to watch them.
The towns and municipalities around the Mountain
range of San Pedro are places of interest to visit. Valencia
de Alcántara is a good example, with more than 40
dolmens in a reduced area, this place is one of
the biggest megalithic sets in Europe.
Alburquerque,
a town close to Valencia de Alcántara, preserves the magic of medieval
ages on its streets, alleys, squares and above all the
Moon Castle. On August the whole population travels back in time to medieval
ages through dresses, joust competitions, markets,... This feast is known
as the Medieval Festival of the Ville of Alburquerque.
