
The Capeas in Segura de León
During the second week of September, Segura de León hosts its main feast. The people of this town make a celebration which preserves a brave tradition.

Each corner of Extremadura shows to the visitor magic feelings and distinguishing features, an example is the way each town celebrate their traditional feasts.
In Segura de León, a little town located in the south of Badajoz province, its inhabitants celebrate a feast in honour of the Cristo de la Reja.
There are 18th and 19th Centuries official documents that state that all the beasts which were not useful for work or food were elegible for a bullfight. People used to donate wood chunks and other objects to build the stands around the corrala (the place where beasts were fought).
The capeas are celebrated some days before and after september the 14th, San José de la Reja day.

Nowadays the main aim is to respect animals: None of the beast are hurt in the capeas, it is clearly forbidden. Once the capeas have finished the cattle returns to the country side.
This tradition has lived for ages until today preserving its original essence. The whole population participates in the different events that complete the feast.
The capeas are so exciting that lots of people come to Segura the León to have a good time, and by the way get to know the zone and surrounding landscapes.
