The Chanfaina (lamb stew)
The last Sunday of April the town of Fuente de Cantos
(Badajoz) offers one of the most famous and well-known dishes of Extremadura:
that is the chanfaina, lamb stew.

This is one of the most popular dishes in Extremadura.
The main element is the lamb, the meat is seasoned
with other elements from the lamb itself such as the liver, the heart, the kidneys,...
As well as lean meat from the lamb too.
A group of small children dressed up
as shepherds hand out the lamb to the older cook. He gives them the lamb
back seasoned and ready to be cooked in a cauldron. This is the beginning of
a great day.
This is a culinary feast, and for that reason the Chanfaina
Cook Contest is the main event on this day. Each cook, who belongs to
a club, prepare delicious stews in large cauldrons in order to everybody have
the chance to eat this exquisite dish of Extremadura.
Moreover, there is a Wine Contest.
The wineries show and offer their best wines to the most demanding wine experts.
The purpose is to win the contest beacuse of the prize and the honour.
The Chanfaina feast is based on trashumance,
for that reason there is a shearing competition
where the participants show their skill by means of scissors.
The town of Fuente
de Cantos is one of the few towns in Extremadura
with several celebrations of interest, apart from the Chanfaina the town also
hosts San Isidro Pilgrimage.
