Guide for norht east Extremadura

Northeast Extremadura, the east part of Caceres province. It is a well known zone for tourism due the interesting nature, history and culture. Zones in this area: Las Villuercas, Ibores and Campo Aranuelo, Tierras de Trujillo and Miajadas, Monfrague National Park and Tierras de Plasencia, La Vera, Valle del Jerte (Valley of Jerte), Valle del Ambroz and the beautiful zones of Las Hurdes and Tierras de Granadilla.

 

 

Villuercas - Guadalupe - Cáceres - Extremadura

It is a zone characterized by the biodiversity and its beautiful natural landscapes.

There are many points of interest: for example, the big and old tree called La Lorena de la Trucha (in the list of singular trees of Extremadura) or the Ecological and Biodiversity Corridor arround the Guadalupejo river as well as the ZEPA (zone of special protection for birds) in the mountain range Sierra de las Villuercas.

The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe (declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO) is a beautiful monastery whose main buildings starting at 14th - 15th century. It is located in the village of Guadalupe.

There are many natural routes to practise walking, trekking or other outdoor activities.

It is a pleasure to visit every little town of this zone: Alía, Cañamero, Logrosán, Berzocana, Cabañas del Castillo, Deleitosa, Adeacentenera...

 

Los Ibores - Cáceres - Extremadura

This zone is a contrast between the mountain range lands and the dehesa areas. It is the ideal habitat for goats and sheeps, whose milk is used for the famous cheese of The Ibores.

The remains of the Roman temple of Augustobriga are now near Bohonal de Ibor. They were taken away few years ago from the waters of the Valdecañas reservoir.

In Castañar de Ibor are the famous Castañar de Ibor Caves. These caves shows the beauty of karst, resulting in a fascinating world of shapes and colours.

We also recommend to visit every rural town and villages of this zone.

 

Campo Arañuelo - Navalmoral - Cáceres - Extremadura

It is located near the Monfrague National Park, a true paradise for birdwatching, Campo Arañuelo has beautiful landscapes of meadows, plains and pine forests.

The Valdecañas reservoir has created a natural environment ideal for native birds and is a crossing point for migratory birds.

Navalmoral de la Mata is a modern town and it is very well communicated, so it is a good place for using as base for visiting the north of Extremadura.

The Castle of Belvis de Monroy is very known because its beauty and majesty.

As in every zone of Extremadura, there are many feast and events in Campo Arañuelo. The Navalmoral Carnival is very famous and a lot of people goes to Navalmoral to celebrate the groups parade and other activities.

 

Trujillo - Miajadas - Cáceres - Extremadura

Both are zones with a rich variety of natural areas, a paradise for birdwatching and all kind of outdoor activities.

They are located near the Monfrague National Park

The zone is made of agricultural lands and natural landscapes, together with plains, wetlands and reservoirs..

The city of Trujillo is one of the most important historical cities of Extremadura. Its castle, the walled enclosure and the main square (Plaza Mayor) are impresive and can transport the visitor back in time to past epochs.

Trujillo celebrates in Easter a feast called Chiviri: the people dressed with typical costumes with red shawls on the neck and dance popular songs all the day.

Also the International Cheese Fair takes place in Trujillo in late April.

 

Plasencia - Parque Nacional de Monfragüe - Cáceres - Extremadura

The Monfrague National Park, declared Biosphere reserve by UNESCO, is a representative environment of forest and Mediterranean bush.

It is an area of oaks and cork trees, forest and Mediterranean scrub. The biodiversity at Monfrague is impressive. Monfrague National Park has the biggest breeding colony of Monk Vulture or Eurasian Black Vulture (Aegypius monachus), the worldwide biggest concentration of Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti) and one of the biggest colonies of Black Storks (Ciconia nigra). It is considered as the main refuge of the European Mediterranean fauna.

Plasencia is a beautiful town that has one of the largest historical and artistic heritage of Extremadura.

Plasencia has two cathedrals: the Old Cathedral was builded in the XIII century, and the New Cathedral from XVI century.

The main square, called Plaza Mayor, is surrounded by arcades and is guarded by the famous Mayorga, a statue located in the top of the tower of the town hall.

The old town (medieval town) has some palaces: Mirabel, Monroy, Dos Torres.. and other old buildings from medievo and later centuries.

FIO, the International Ornithological Tourism Fair or commonly knows as Extremadura Birdwatching Fair is on the last weekend of February, into the Monfrague National Park

The Great Tuesday Feast (Fiesta del Martes Mayor) of Plasencia take place in the main square of this town on August, first Tuesday.

 

La Vera - Cáceres - Extremadura

The beauty of this region, La Vera, is due in part to its rivers and the special climate of northern Extremadura.

A beautiful environment as well as the little towns and natural landscapes.

Garganta La Olla and Cuacos de Yuste are two nice towns declared Historical and Artistic Places.

The Monastery of Yuste (near Cuacos de Yuste) was the residence of Emperor Carlos V in the lasts days of life.

In Jarandilla de la Vera is located the Castle of the Counts of Oropesa (s. XV)

There are many festivals, feasts and events in almost every season. The Pero Palo feast is a very special way to celebrate the carnival, just some weeks before Easter. The people of Villanueva de la Vera judges a puppet representing an ancient bandit.

In Easter, Valverde de la Vera celebrates an ancient tradition, the Empalaos, surrounded by mistery and devotion in the night of Maundy Thusday.

 

Valle del Jerte - Cáceres - Extremadura

This valley is protected by mountains, which are crossed by currents of water flowing into the river Jerte.

In this singular environment, with its own microclimate, is growing more than a million cherry trees, that bloom in spring lead to a real spectacle in which the whole valley is covered in white like a winter snow landscape.

In the Valley of Jerte you can find many gorges, waterfalls and natural pools.

Near the town of Jerte is located the Information Center, with info about the valley, flora, fauna and economics of this zone.

Visitors can practice walking through many routes and visit the Infernos Gorge Natural Reserve, an old glacier valley that was shaped by quaternary ice.

The Valley of Jerte is a very known zone in Spain, a zone to relax and enjoy the nature and its special climate.

On January 19th and 20th, the Jarramplas, a mystical figure, walks by Piornal narrow streets. This ancient figure symbolizes the Good over the Evil.

 

 

Valle del Ambroz - Cáceres - Extremadura

Through this valley located in northern Extremadura was the ancient Roman road made of stones called Via de la Plata (route of silver). This route joined the north of Spain with the south in the Roman epoch.

The Valley of Ambroz is a zone with beautiful views and natural landscapes.

You need to visit Hervas. It is one of the most outstanding towns in the zone due to its jewish heritage that it still is preserved. Or the old Roman baths at Baños de Montemayor.

There are many other points of interest in the zone:

  • The celtic bull at Segura de Toro
  • The Roman road
  • The Palace of Sotofermoso in Abadía

Hurdes - Tierras de Granadilla - Cáceres - Extremadura

They are lands formed by mountains and green hills, dotted with waterfalls (such as the spectacular Waterfall of Miacera near El Gasco), gorges and streams, many of whom become summer pools of clear water.

In the town of Granadilla (declared a Historic-Artistic Place) we can see an impressive Gothic tower.

Near Guijo de Granadilla are the remains of the ancient Roman city of Caparra, with the impressive Roman arc.

Pinofranqueado celebrates the feast of 'Enramá' in late August.
